Geropsychology is a field within psychology that applies the knowledge and methods of psychology to understanding and helping persons and their families maintain well-being, overcome problems, and achieve maximum potential during later life. People 65 years of age and older are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and by 2030, older adults will account for 20% of our nation’s population. Although there is a broad range of opportunities in psychological research and practice focusing on older adults, there are not enough psychologists to keep pace with the increasing demand.

The specialty of geropsychology addresses many biopsychosocial problems encountered by older adults and their families, including (but not limited to): depression and anxiety; dementia and related behavioral/lifestyle changes; changes in decision making or everyday living abilities; coping with and managing chronic illness; behavioral health concerns such as insomnia and pain; grief and loss; family caregiving strains; adjustment to aging-related stresses including marital/family conflict, changing roles, and downsizing to assisted living or skilled nursing; and end-of-life care.

Geropsychologists serve older adults and their families, as well as healthcare social service and residential organizations. Services are delivered across a range of outpatient and inpatient medical, mental health, and long-term care settings. Skills and procedures utilized include assessment (clinical interviewing, cognitive and functional performance testing, evaluation of decision making and functional capacities, and risk assessment); intervention (individual and group psychotherapy, health promotion); and consultation (with families, professionals, service agencies, interdisciplinary staff and paraprofessional training, participation in interdisciplinary teams, and program development and evaluation).
