Orphan Train: A Novel
by Christina Baker Kline

Orphan Train: A Novel is about two women and their interwoven stories of coming-of-age in different time period.  The main character is a 91 year old woman who kept her past as an orphan train child a secret throughout her life. A seventeen year old girl in the foster system discovers her secret past when she cleans out the older woman's attic as part of community service work. As their relationship unfolds and they slowly understand one another, they discovery that their lives have much in common due to their tumultuous pasts.

The novel is based on true events about “Orphan Trains,” a largely hidden chapter of American history from 1854-1929.  During this time, an estimated 150,000 impoverished, homeless children from large cities on the east coast, such as New York and Boston, were placed on trains and taken to rural areas, mostly in the Midwest, in search of adoptive homes where the they could live and work.

PLEASE NOTE: There are several books with very similar titles, including one by the same author.  The one we are reading was published in 2013, is 278 pages, and is rated 4.6 stars by 20.094 Amazon reviewers.
